Physical activity is a well-known contributor to good health. Unfortunately, as we get older, it’s harder to get the required amount of movement needed to reap the health benefits. According to the CDC, “By age 75, about one in three men and one in two women engage in no physical activity.” With some social support from friends and family, staying active is completely feasible. Physical activity can provide many benefits and there are many different ways for folks to achieve this goal.
Benefits of Physical Activity
One of the most important things for adults as we age is our independence. In order to continue to live on our own, with either little or no additional help, we need to stay strong. Loss of strength and stamina is usually thought to be caused by aging. It’s also caused by a reduction in exercise. Regular exercise helps preserve muscles, joints, and bones. By keeping these fit, the risk of falls and fractures is reduced, allowing more self-sufficiency.
Not only does exercise help our muscles, joints, and bones, physical activity can reduce blood pressure and reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, colon cancer and diabetes. In addition, there is a psychological benefit. Symptoms of anxiety and depression are reduced after physical activities and our overall mood can change for the better.
