Meals on Wheels is an organization dedicated to helping the elderly. There are branches all over the world, including in Montgomery County. The program started out as a way to bring food to senior citizens who are homebound, but it has grown into so much more. Now, Meals on Wheels offers Breakfast Bags, group dining, and rides for seniors who aren’t able to drive themselves. If this sounds like a mission you want to help, there are lots of ways you can.

Become a driver.

Meals on Wheels consistently needs reliable volunteer drivers. All the organization asks is for one shift per week; you simply pick up the meals and deliver them to the waiting seniors in their homes. It’s a great way to get out, meet people, and feel good about helping others in the process.

Also, you can sign up to work with the Breakfast Bag group on Saturdays. The service group gets together two Saturdays a month and goes above and beyond just handing off food. That being said, Breakfast Bag volunteers show up whenever they have time. There are no minimum hours or shifts required. By volunteering to work with Breakfast Bags, you get the opportunity pick the food, decorate the bags, and then take them to those who need it. It adds a loving touch to an already altruistic program

Work an event.

Meals on Wheels of Montgomery County always has something going on. Just check out their event page. By working the events, you can spread the word of this wonderful organization. These events help bring in both money and volunteers, both of which are desperately needed. The website updates on a regular basis, so check back for upcoming events!

Donate.

Busy schedules can get the best of anyone, but there are still ways to help out Meals on Wheels. One of the best ways is to donate to the cause. There’s an easy link right on their website to make it incredibly easy. Also, if your workplace wants to get together and donate, Meals on Wheels does accept sponsorships. This way more people are involved and more seniors are fed. It’s a great feeling for everyone.

Spread the word.

The last thing you can do to help Meals on Wheels of Montgomery County is simply to spread the word about the work it does. If you have a Facebook or other social media, a simple link back to the Meals on Wheels page will go a long way. You can also mention their organization at any places where people gather: work, church, book club, and more. By making people more aware, they are more likely to pitch in, which means Meals on Wheels can reach even more homebound seniors.
